Farmer's Market Saturdays

I've decided to add a new feature to the blog.  Each Saturday, I am going to explore a farmer's market in the Chicagoland area.

So what is a farmer's market anyways?  From Wikipedia:  clicky

This Week:
Homewood Farmer's Market
17951 Dixie Highway
Homewood, IL
Saturdays, 8am-1pm, July-October

The Loot:  Local Honey, Fresh Pretzel Bread, Homemade Dog Treats, Mini-Plums, Parsnips, Garlic, Assorted Cheeses, Mints, and Radishes

I'll admit that this was my first foray into the world of farmer's markets.  I'll also admit that this idea struck me at approximately 11am on Saturday, which didn't leave much room for options.  The Homewood Farmer's Market was admittedly small, but overall, a good experience for my first dip into the pool.  There were several small booths selling local produce from the Chicagoland area as well as few small arts and crafts booths.  Although not expansive in it's selection, there's no denying that the food items were fresh and straight from the farm.

Aside from being fresh and supporting local farmers, the items were exceptionally affordable.  I was pleasantly surprised that $20 bought all of my loot pictured above.  The produce items were the best value, with none of them costing more than $2.

My adorable mini garlic bulb...who new garlic could be cute?

I'm not going to lie...a day later and the pretzel bread has been decimated, the plums are 1/2 gone, and the cheese hunks are suspiciously smaller than they were yesterday.  As an appreciator of food, I can honestly say that there is a difference in taste with the fresher items.  I found myself excited to cook, with the fresh ingredients being my inspiration.  I can save money and feel good about supporting local business...all in all, not a bad Saturday!

Next Weekend:  Mokena's French Market

This Week:  Michigan...any suggestions?
